Editing Services & Pricing

“Colleen is fast, thorough, and her edits were immensely helpful. My books are better because of her.” — Matt King, author of The Circle War series

* * *

My focus as an editor is to help indie authors release quality books with confidence, without breaking the bank. As an indie myself, I understand the importance of putting out your best work. I also understand that, for many indies, the price of editing can be quite prohibitive. It is my personal goal to provide quality editing services for indie authors in a timely, professional, and cost-effective manner.

So we can help each other. I can offer you quality edits and almost twenty years of experience, and you can help me get this little indie editing business of mine off the ground. Together, we can make some amazing art.

Here are the services I offer:

Developmental Editing

This is my most comprehensive editing package. Developmental editing essentially combines copy editing and an overall check for consistency and flow. For example, I’ll make sure that you don’t say your hero’s eyes are brown in chapter two and blue in chapter fifteen. I’ll ensure that hyphenation or other stylistic choices are consistent throughout, and that you don’t repeat certain words or phrases too often (we all do, and often we don’t even realize it until someone points it out to us!) I’ll point out awkward or clunky phrasing and recommend changes that will make your words flow. Plot holes? I’ll be on the lookout for them. Pacing issues, confusing details, and other common narrative issues will also be addressed. Aside from that, this package editing encompasses checks for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage AND a second editing pass after you make any changes recommended in the first round of editing. This level ensures a clean, polished finished product.

  • Pricing: $0.0080 per word (Example: a 60,000 word book would cost $480 to edit.) I require half of the payment up front, via Paypal, and the rest before I deliver the final edits.

Copy Editing

If you are fairly certain there are no consistency issues or errors, and just want to ensure that your book is polished, this is the level for you. In a copy edit, I look for spelling, grammar, typo, punctuation, and usage errors, as well as repeated words or awkward phrasing. I do not offer any feedback on stylistic issues or consistency; this is a service that polishes what you already have.

  • Pricing: $0.0055 per word (Example: a 60,000 word book would cost $330 to edit.) I require half up front, and the other half before I deliver final edits.

This is a very basic check for typos, spelling, grammatical issues, and punctuation. It is a way to have another set of eyes looking at your work to ensure that there are no embarrassing mistakes and you can publish or submit your work knowing that it is clean and professional.

  • Pricing: $0.0040 per word (Example: a 60,000 word book would cost $240 to edit.) I require half of the fee up front, and the rest before I deliver your final proofread.

If you have any questions at all about my editing services for indie authors, please feel free to contact me. I’m looking forward to working with you!

About Colleen

Hi there! I’m Colleen Vanderlinden: author, editor, reader, wannabe crafter, bread baker, Basset hound wrangler…

But, mostly, I’m someone who’s obsessed with words. I’m the author of sixteen books, including the HiddenHidden: SoulhunterCopper FallsStrikeForce, and Exile series. Before I began my adventure in indie publishing, I wrote and edited web content for companies such as About.com, TreeHugger.com, PlanetGreen.com, and Remilon LLC. Over the course of those assignments, I have edited news stories, blog posts, novels, articles, and promotional copy, and I’m looking forward to putting those skills (nearly 20 years’ worth!) to work for my fellow indie authors.

My books have consistently sold well on Amazon, and two of them (Home and Nether) were finalists for the RT Book Reviews Reviewers’ Choice awards for 2014 and 2015, respectively. Day’s End, the fourth book in my StrikeForce series, was an Urban Fantasy Top Pick for RT Book Reviews Magazine, and my books have been nominated for several online book awards.
My freelance clients have called me “a seasoned professional” who provides “strong attention to detail” and who is “always punctual.” I’ve been lucky to work with some amazing people and organizations, and now it’s time for the next phase of my adventure.

My Mission

I started this business because, first of all, I wanted to have another line of work in addition to my fiction and freelance writing, and I find editing very satisfying. There’s nothing quite like putting that final polish on someone’s work and knowing you’ve had a hand in putting something beautiful out into the world. Secondly, I want to help my fellow indie authors. It’s a lonely business, and we all need every bit of support we can get.
If you’re interested in working with me, please check out my Services & Pricing page. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via my Contact page.

Thanks for your interest!

Client Testimonials

“Colleen is fast, thorough, and her edits were immensely helpful. My books are better because of her.”

Matt King, author of The Circle War Series
Books edited by Colleen: Ascension and The Last Winter

“An author knits together a story in a sequence of loops and knots. When deep in the work, she doesn’t notice places where a knot doesn’t quite close or a loop is a little too open. Great editors like Colleen are able to take the cloth up to the light, look for the inconsistencies and changes in patterns, and help the author to perfect the weave.”

Kendrai Meeks, author of the Red Hood Chronicles
Books edited by Colleen: Requited Hood and Reluctant Hood

“I hired Colleen to copy edit my second book and I can say, unreservedly, that it was a fantastic experience. Her edits of my baby were clear, concise, and full of constructive criticism. She didn’t hesitate to tell me where she thought I’d gone wrong, but tempered it with what she liked about where I was going with the story. The process of working with Colleen was easy and painless, and I know she helped me put together a much better book than I could’ve without her (invaluable) contributions. I cannot wait to work with her again!”

Amy Cissell, author of the Eleanor Morgan series
Books edited by Colleen: The Waning Moon
